I just received an unexpected fax from Dan Kennedy who wanted to know if I was interested in rewriting the chapter on “graphic enhancements” in his classic book, The Ultimate Sales Letter.
My fax back was short and to the point… HELL YEAH!!!
I own the very first edition (1990) of The Ultimate Sales Letter and it was the book that introduced me to Dan Kennedy and his powerful marketing strategies. To be asked personally by Dan to contribute to the 2011 edition of this book is an honor and shows how important Dan considers the topic of “copy cosmetics.”
As a matter of fact, back in May, I was the guest of Dan at his Business of Copywriting Academy where I discussed the topic of copy cosmetics and the critical relationship between HOW your copy looks and the response it gets.
Over the past few years, I’ve immersed myself in the study of copy cosmetic techniques and strategies. One of these techniques includes the use of handwritten margin notes and doodles, which triggered the idea for CopyDoodles® first for my own client work and most recently for thousands of business owners around the world.
Copy cosmetics are an often overlooked, but critically important topic for any direct response marketer or copywriter. Their proper use allows you to create attention-grabbing marketing that is easy (and fun) to read and makes an emotional connection with the reader. Plus they set you apart from the 97% of marketers who don’t use them.

A few times a year we pick two chapter members to go head to head in what we call the “marketing showdown” The whole premise of the marketing showdown is to demonstrate action and implementation. All of the chapter members and myself each receive and enjoy reading Bill Glazer & Dan Kennedy’s NO B.S. Marketing Newsletter every month. The newsletter is jam packed full of insight, business strategies and marketing success nuggets.
A couple of times per year I hold what we call a marketing showdown. It is where I challenge two chapter members to read the NO B.S. Newsletter, run with an idea and monetize it by the next chapter meeting. So the showdown is basically about getting results in less than a month, but it serves as a great learning experience for all of the group to participate and benefit.
The showdown challenges the members to pick a nugget or strategy from the NO B.S. newsletter and then implement the strategy or idea into their business prior to the next monthly chapter meeting. Then live at the meeting, each of the two members go head to head in the showdown. They each have 10-15 minutes to get in front of the group, discuss and share how they implemented the strategy and report back with their results and how they monetized or grew their business thru the Dan Kennedy NO B.S. principle learned from the newsletter.
Then our whole chapter votes to pick a winner. Not only does the winner get a bunch of fine bonuses and prizes, but most importantly they get the pride and satisfaction of knowing that they took action, implemented an idea and got results in a short period of time. The confidence and success that comes from these sort of activites is just one of the many ways that makes our group so much different from a typical networking group.

Most successful businesses use direct marketing because they understand its power, measurability, and effectiveness. Successful direct marketing strategies create a proper balance between your targeted MARKET, the appropriate MESSAGE, and the right MEDIA. For business owners interested in generating new business or in extracting incremental revenues from their existing customer base, direct marketing should be a primary weapon. Done right, it returns serious dollars for your business. Done wrong, your results will be positively frightening.
The key words are “done right.” Throughout my years I’ve seen one common mistake that happens time and time again with most businesses. It goes something like this: (more…)
